Nutrition

Right now we are studying Nutrition. We are making a notebook/lapbook. I haven't decided exactly what to call it. The kids are enjoying this unit because it deals with something they love... FOOD. Yesterday we started a Healthy Food Journal and each of the kids tried to plan 3 balanced meals. They found it rather difficult.

Today we worked on vocabulary words. The kids also made a chart of healthy foods and unhealthy foods. They did a good job. They even debated on whether pickles are healthy or not. They decided that it was not healthy because of all the salt. We talked about Vitamins & Minerals and fats.

Once the children finished their charts, they worked on creating their own superhero and villain. The job of the villain will be to tempt children to eat bad foods. The good guy is going to help children make healthy choices. Once the kids design their characters they will create a story or comic strip. Dragon has decided that he will make a comic strip, Squirrel has not decided and I think that Tracker will write a story. I have never seen the kids attack an assignment with so much enthusiasm. I believe that they created their superhero today and will work on their bad guy tomorrow. Once they are done, I will post the pictures.

Botany Notebook(lots of pictures)

We are making a botany notebook for our new unit. A friend wanted to see some pictures so here they are. First we went on a bike ride to do some tree observations. I thought that I would just share where we were doing the observations. We are so lucky to be able to do this here...Here are some pictures of their botany books. They each made a botanist. They wrote what a botanist does at the top of the page.
This is a flower mosaic that the one of the kids made. They each drew a plant and labeled the parts. They had to answer this question..Are Plants Useful? Once they answered the question, they had to illustrate how they are useful.
The leaves have our vocabulary words on them. We are a little behind on making these.

This is a fan book that lists the reasons that trees are important to us. We were using a website to get the reasons and my kids came up with 2 reasons that were not on the website, food & building materials.
Here is their copywork. "A tree has leaves. A tree has a stem. A tree has roots". Then they had to illustrate it. We don't do copywork much.
Here is our last book that we have completed so far. It is a flip book of the 3 main tree types. First page identifies the tree type. The second page has a description of the tree and final page has a picture of the tree.

A New Start

I am sorry that I haven't been around. It has just seemed like one thing after another around here. We had to replace our van. We were told only a week after getting it fixed that it was unsafe to drive it any longer. I was very mad. But we now have a new very reliable Jeep Patriot. I have always wanted to own and Jeep Wrangler. I didn't get it this time..but maybe next time ;). I have always said that I need one since I live at the beach. LOL.

We are currently on spring break...today is the last day. We will start school with a purpose on Monday. We will also be starting our Spring schedule of only 4 days a week. We will have Fridays to enjoy living at the beach before tourist season starts.

I have decided that we are going to be doing unit studies for science from now on. I am in the process of trying to plan our current unit...botany. Yep I know nothing like waiting until the last minute.

Look for some new additions to my blog's sidebar. I will be adding some great unit study links and much more.

Iditarod 2008

We are back from a little bit of a break. Life just got too crazy so we took some time off.

Today we are back at it. We worked on our Iditarod unit. The kids each did a mini biography(if you are interested in the form that I made leave me a message and I will email it to you) on their mushers. They also made posters to show support for their mushers.

Dragon is supporting Liz Parish. He chose her because she didn't have anyone supporting her when we were choosing someone to follow.

Tracker is following Rod Whaley. Tracker made the decision because he is from Tennessee, which is close to us in SC. He also liked him because is a military man.

Squirrel is supporting Zoya DeNure. The decision was simple...she was a girl with a cool name. Gotta love it!

They also made a little book showing the equipment that the mushers would need on their adventure.

Here is a link to Eye on the Trail>>Official Iditarod Race Blog.

You can get Daily Video Updates here at The Iditarod Insider.

I will put pictures up as soon as I get my camera. I left it in the truck. I also have some pictures from a trip to the aquarium to share as well.

Arctic Animal Scavenger Hunt

The first thing that we did was brainstorm on what animals lived in the Arctic. Each child had to pick an arctic animal to study. They had some information that they needed to find: habitat, diet & fast facts(measurements, how many young there were, what their young were called). After we started the research we made a venn diagram comparing the 3 animals. The kids had a bunch of fun trying to find similarities. This was their very first research project. I think that they did a wonderful job. After they completed their poster, each of the created a poem "What is a ____?". They were very creative. I was amazed to see that Dragon, who is an artist, struggled with this idea. He is always creating his own stories and drawing very colorful pictures. When it came to this assignment he had a hard time. I believe that he just wanted to have it perfect the first time.

Alaska

I took a blank map of Alaska to Kinko's and had them make it the size of a poster. They ended up enlarging it by 400%. The kids & I colored in the water & Canada. The kids then labeled the major cities. If you look at the map it reminds me of a bear. Here is a close up of the map.The kids were very excited to learn that Kodiak Island was a real place. We are listening toThe kids are really enjoying it. I must admit that I cannot wait to find out what happens next. I am looking forward to reading some of the legends of Native Alaska to the kids this week.
