Christmas Craft of the Day 6

Paper Snowflakes

It is rather warm here. We have been in the 50's & 60's. It is not helping with the feeling of Christmas. So we are going to be making snowflakes today.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras Glitter Graphics

Today is Fat Tuesday. I didn't remember that until it was too late to do anything to plan anything. So we are going to celebrate on Saturday. Today we are going to make some masks, or maybe these masks. We are going to check out lots of recipes to make. Of course we will have to do some improvisation since we don't eat meat. We will learn all about Mardi Gras. I am looking forward to make a King Cake I have never had one before. We are going to create our own beads and floats(see below).

Here is a lesson plan for grades 4 & up but it has some wonderful ideas. Don't forget to check out just "How Mardi Gras Works".

Here are are some Mardi Gras Math Cards.

Design your own Mardi Gras Parade Float

First, choose a theme. A favorite holiday, a country, an animal, a famous person, etc. are all ideas for themes.

A shoe box is a great base to use to create a float. Turn the bottom of the shoe box upside down, so the flat part is on top. Attach the cover of the shoe box to either side so that it stands on end. Cover the shoe box with colored paper, foil, gift wrap or any combination and decorate the float according to its' theme. Small toys, dolls and wooden figures can also be used. Make more than one float and have a whole parade!

Thanks A Million Craft

I am going to make these for the college kids that have been helping out my children's soccer teams this season.

Thanks a Million !!

1 glass pint wide-mouth canning jar + lid and ring
10 of the small 100 Grand candy bars, they come in a package for less than $1.00
1 piece of paper or wrapping tissue
curling ribbon

Line up 5 of the candy bars facing outward around the bottom of the jar. (* it helped to tape the candy wrapper ends to the back of the bar before placing in the jars). Insert a crumpled paper or tissue as "filler" to secure the bars outward, leaving some of the paper or tissue above the bottom layer of bars to be able to support a second layer of the candy bars, positioned again to face outward. This will completely fill the jar (and look so cute!).

We did a jar lid of red construction to fit over the lid, under the ring, and printed a "Thanks a Million!!" on white cardstock, cutting in a smaller circle. When we taped this to the red lit, there was a red framing ring around the white printed sentiment.

2 strips each of red and yellow curling ribbon added that festive final touch to this frugal, fun gift idea!

Fun Frog Collage

We are in the process of making some fun letter stuff with dd. She loves crafts. I found a great idea for a collage.

What you need:
contact paper
green & yellow contruction paper or tissue paper
black circle or googly eye

Directions:

Cut the contact paper into the shape
of a frog. Let the children place construction
paper on it. Place the black circle or eye in the
face of the frog.
Cover the frog with another piece of contact
paper and cut to form a frog collage
Here is our frog in progress and the final project...
We are going to hang it in her window. She has asked to do more. I am going to do a fish shape next. It would be a great craft to go with The Rainbow Fish! Ok, off to the library to see if they have the book.
