We are back from a little bit of a break. Life just got too crazy so we took some time off.
Today we are back at it. We worked on our Iditarod unit. The kids each did a mini biography(if you are interested in the form that I made leave me a message and I will email it to you) on their mushers. They also made posters to show support for their mushers.
Dragon is supporting Liz Parish. He chose her because she didn't have anyone supporting her when we were choosing someone to follow.
Tracker is following Rod Whaley. Tracker made the decision because he is from Tennessee, which is close to us in SC. He also liked him because is a military man.
Squirrel is supporting Zoya DeNure. The decision was simple...she was a girl with a cool name. Gotta love it!
They also made a little book showing the equipment that the mushers would need on their adventure.

Arctic Animal Scavenger Hunt
The first thing that we did was brainstorm on what animals lived in the Arctic. 
Each child had to pick an arctic animal to study. They had some information that they needed to find: habitat, diet & fast facts(measurements, how many young there were, what their young were called). After we started the research we made a venn diagram comparing the 3 animals. The kids had a bunch of fun trying to find similarities. 
This was their very first research project. I think that they did a wonderful job. After they completed their poster, each of the created a poem "What is a ____?". They were very creative. I was amazed to see that Dragon, who is an artist, struggled with this idea. He is always creating his own stories and drawing very colorful pictures. When it came to this assignment he had a hard time. I believe that he just wanted to have it perfect the first time.

Alaska
I took a blank map of Alaska to Kinko's and had them make it the size of a poster. They ended up enlarging it by 400%. The kids & I colored in the water & Canada. The kids then labeled the major cities. If you look at the map it reminds me of a bear. Here is a close up of the map.
The kids were very excited to learn that Kodiak Island was a real place. We are listening to
The kids are really enjoying it. I must admit that I cannot wait to find out what happens next. I am looking forward to reading some of the legends of Native Alaska to the kids this week.
